431 – The Old Millhouse – Dalkeith

Located in the historic town of Dalkeith, less than 9 miles from Edinburgh, The Old Millhouse is a large and luxurious self-catering country house and the winner of the Best Self Catering Experience at the 2018 Thistle Awards. The house was abandoned in ruins when it was discovered by its current owners and has undergone sympathetic restoration which combines modern day comforts with historic charm. Set in three and a half acres of beautiful grounds bounded by the River Esk this stunning property is ideal for a multi-generation family get together or for groups of friends.

Should you wish, the delightful owners, can organise a range of event for you including Pilates round the outdoor swim spa, Fishing on the river Esk with a ghillie, gin and whisky tastings, Art Classes in the grounds, Tours of Scotland with Rabbies Tours and trips into Edinburgh. If you are here to celebrate an anniversary or birthday a chef can be provided to make the event truly memorable. The owners live in the grounds and are at hand for advice and suggestions before and during your stay.

Built in 1703, this lovely stone built property offers plenty of separate spaces for those looking for some peace and quiet as well as large communal areas for those wishing to get together. Bowls of fruit and vases of flower make one feel instantly welcome. The ground floor has a stylish drawing room with a working fireplace and cleverly hidden wall-mounted TV – a lovely spot for those cooler evenings. The orangery is a lovely light-filled room with glorious views across the gardens and plenty of comfortable seating grouped around a fireplace, a dining table with seating for up to 10 people and is the perfect place to gather together. If you are feeling like a little peace and quiet a small snug furnished with comfortable seating is a great spot to relax with a book or even have a snooze! A large well equipped kitchen has plenty of crockery and cutlery and the owners have thoughtfully provided a delicious welcome pack including local bread, oatcakes, fresh eggs, Scottish cheeses, porridge, smoked salmon, shortbread and nibbles.

The two upper floors house 5 beautifully appointed double bedrooms furnished with an eclectic mix of the antique and modern. A great deal of thought has gone into furnishings and fittings including providing super-comfortable Hypnos beds. Three of the rooms have super-king beds and the other two rooms have beds which can be arranged as twins or super-kings on request. All the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, two have baths with shower over and three have showers. Complimentary locally sourced shampoo, hand and body lotion, conditioner and liquid soap are provided as are fluffy towels, bathrobes, slippers and hair-driers.
